We often get posed with the question “What’s the difference between Microsoft 365 and Office 365?”, or “I thought Microsoft 365 and Office 365 were the same.”
In this article we explain the key features across Office 365 and Microsoft 365 (with a particular focus on business subscriptions), in order to give you clarity on which solution is the best fit for your business requirements.
WHAT IS OFFICE 365?
Office 365 is a cloud-based suite centred around business productivity. It includes apps (many of which you’re probably already familiar) such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. Depending on the type of subscription (most of our customers opt for Office 365 Business Premium), you may also have access to Skype for Business, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Yammer, Planner and more. Office 365 includes a host of excellent features that improve business collaboration, productivity and security.
Office 365 is available on a monthly, per-user subscription basis. There are a variety of plans to choose from depending on your specific needs. Prices start from just £9.40 per user, per month – these subscriptions can be mixed and matched across your business, and you are able to change them at any time.
WHAT IS MICROSOFT 365?
Microsoft 365 is a bundle of existing products under one license. Microsoft 365 Business includes Office 365, but also includes Windows 10 Enterprise, Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS), and machine learning.
Like Office 365, there are multiple plans to choose from depending on your particular requirements with prices starting at £15.10 per user per month.
All of the products included within Microsoft 365 are available as separate licenses; meaning if you can’t find a specific plan that suits your business you can choose the individual components that are needed. A negative is that you may miss out on some of the machine learning benefits and we have found that purchasing the individual components costs on average an extra £6 per user, per month.
If you’re not already using all the separate components of Microsoft 365, it can often be difficult to figure out if it’s going to add value to your business and if so, which plan to opt for.
The question to ask yourself is, do you need everything that’s included in Microsoft 365? If you don’t, you may be better off buying what you need separately. If you do happen to require everything within Microsoft 365, you should then choose a specific license.
