After January 14, 2020, support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 / R2 will end. Meaning the end of regular security updates. INFINITY are here to help you migrate to current software versions for greater security, performance and innovation.

While ‘end-of-life’ products don’t stop working immediately, Microsoft will no longer provide support for them. If anything breaks, there might not be a fix available.

The biggest risk of continuing to use end of life products is that they will no longer receive any patches or security updates. This leaves your business vulnerable to cyber-attacks with a potential for data loss. It’s virtually impossible to prevent attacks from hackers, if a product contains security vulnerabilities that aren’t being fixed. This also raises huge compliance concerns around regulations such as GDPR.

As previous examples have highlighted, hackers’ prey on vulnerabilities and end-of-life software provides them with ample opportunities.  Think back to The WannaCry ransomware attack in May 2017; a worldwide cyberattack by the WannaCry ransomware cryptoworm, which targeted devices running out of support Microsoft Windows operating systems. The WannaCry ransomware attack is reported to have exceeded £3billion in damages.

As a business you spend time and money increasing security awareness and implementing anti-malware solutions. Why take unnecessary risks with your software by simply not upgrading it?

Statements from Microsoft:

“While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10.”

“Customers who use Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 products and services should migrate to Microsoft Azure to take advantage of 3 additional years of critical and important security updates. For environments other than Azure, we recommend customers upgrade to the latest version before the deadline.”
