NEAR £1M LOSS AS HACKERS ATTEMPT TO SABOTAGE PREMIER LEAGUE TRANSFER DEAL

It has been reported today in the National news that a Premier League club came close to losing £1m during a transfer deal due to encountering a cyber attack.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said the email address of a Premier League club’s Managing Director had been hacked during a transfer negotiation. Fortunately, it was the intervention of the unnamed club’s bank that identified and stopped the theft which could have resulted in a loss of around £1m.

“The impact of cybercriminals cashing in on this industry is very real,” said the NCSC’s Paul Chichester.

Following this incident sports organisations are now being urged to tighten their cyber security.

This is just one of several incidents highlighted as evidence that sport needed to improve its cyber security – another breach saw a Football League club hit by ransomware which cut off its security systems, blocking turnstiles and almost resulting in a fixture postponement.

The BBC also reported an incident where a member of staff at a racecourse lost £15,000 after attempting to buy groundskeeping equipment from a fake version of eBay.

The NCSC have said its report has found that hackers were trying to compromise sporting organisations on a daily basis, often by targeting business email or using ransomware to shut down critical systems.

There are multiple steps that can be taken by all businesses to ensure that they do not fall foul to hackers. These include:

– Setting up multi-factor authentication

-Antivirus software with email protection

-Back Up and Disaster Recovery solutions

This incident has highlighted the importance of a strong IT infrastructure that is backed by industry-leading cyber safety measures. If the bank had not identified the fraudulent activity, their could have been a significant loss.
